Weevils unable to break down robust Rams
The Weevils will hope to right the wrongs of last week tonight when they play host to the Grenfell Panthers under the lights at 7:40 pm, with the Redbacks kicking off at 7:00 pm. What could make a better Friday night than that?
The West Wyalong Weevils travelled to Condobolin on Saturday, May 2, to take on the Rams for the Rams annual Ladies’ Day fixture.
The atmosphere was fantastic as the local community gathered to celebrate the women who support the rugby union club in various capacities.
A large crowd saw the support extend to partners, mothers, daughters, volunteers, and committee members who maintain the regional competition.
The Weevils fielded a strong line-up with a deep bench for the round four clash.
The match began as a physical contest with the first twenty-five minutes defined by grit and disciplined defence from West Wyalong.
The Weevils spent a significant portion of the opening period inside their own half as the team worked to turn away repeated Rams attacks.
Physicality remained high in the middle of the paddock with heavy contact and clashing bodies throughout the early stages.
The Condobolin Rams eventually broke the deadlock to score the opening try of the afternoon.
West Wyalong created several opportunities inside the Rams' twenty-two-metre zone but could not convert the pressure into points before the break.
Condobolin entered the half-time interval with a 10-0 lead following three unconverted tries.
The second half proved more difficult for the visitors as discipline dropped and tackles became loose across the field.
The Rams capitalised on broken play to cross the line for another four tries in the second period.
Will Brissett provided a highlight for West Wyalong by crossing the stripe for a well-earned try.
Brissett led from the front row throughout the entire game and was rewarded for a tireless individual effort.
The final score stood at 34-5 in favour of the Condobolin Rams.
Toby Denyer and Jamie Denyer were standouts for the Weevils by bringing heart and enthusiasm to the defensive line.
Josh Davies also had a strong performance and consistently put his body on the line for the jersey.
The result marks the first win of the year for the Condobolin Rams.
West Wyalong will look to take the positives from the early defensive effort into the next round.
The club thanked the travelling supporters who made the trip to Condobolin to cheer on the side.
The Weevils will return to home turf next week to take on Grenfell.
Josh Davies earned one point for his performance, while Toby Denyer received two points, and Connor Minogue was awarded three points.
The players’ player honours went to front-rower Will Brissett.
