Weevils fall to Coota
Weevils uphill battle for finals as Redbacks close in on minor premiership
THE West Wyalong Weevils will need to win their remaining games and hope other results go their way if they are to feature in the South West Oils Cup Men’s Rugby competition this season.
Cootamundra won 25-7 in a game that was tighter than the score suggests.
Despite a Herculean effort infront of a healthy home crowd - particularly in defence, the Weevils couldn’t go with the highly fancied Cootamundra side who have one eye on finals football already.
The Weevils have been brave this season but it looks as though the mountain maybe too much to climb in season 2025 after sides above them did them no favours over the weekend.
The Old Boys game was also filled with excitement though not the scoreboard kind, as both clubs fielded former players in a popular legends game. The club paid tribute to the Cootamundra Old boys who made the trip over for a spirited game of rugby that certainly whipped the crowd up before the main game.
According to the scoreboard, the final result was - 3 bottles of port vs 2 bottles of stones
The Redbacks meanwhile had the bye this week as they prepare for their biggest game of the year this weekend.
The Weevils and Redbacks head down the road to Temora this coming Saturday 5th July. The Redbacks will be pushing for that top spot in a top of the table clash, winner takes the minor premiership game that already has the feeling of a grand final.
The Weevils meanwhile will be battling it out to bring home the Luggas Cup and rescue a disappointing season either one over their arch rival neighbours who sit a spot above them on the ladder. It looks to be an entertaining and fascinating Saturday afternoon of rugby!
