RFS Riverina Zone joins the future of frontline of connectivity
Fleet fitted with VaaN allowing for more connectivity
COMMAND vehicles across the Riverina Zone have been fully fitted with Vehicle-as-a-Node (VaaN) technology — giving crews access to fast internet, improved communications, and critical backup connectivity when it matters most.
Each vehicle is now a mobile communications hub, equipped with Telstra 4G/5G and Starlink satellite capability. That means reliable coverage for voice comms, Mobile Data Terminals, onboard systems, and even personal device use — even when mobile reception is down or there's no Public Safety Network.
Importantly, these vehicles can also act as community Wi-Fi hotspots during fire emergencies, especially in areas where normal telecom services are unavailable.
And while the Starlink dish on the roof might look like a rear spoiler ready for the Bathurst 1000, the reality is the dish is anything but that.
The RFS is in the process of rolling out the VaaN project across the state to improve connectivity and functionality giving them access to fast internet, better communications and the ability to be a community hotspot during fire emergencies, if there is no mainstream telecommunication infrastructure available. Over the next 12 to 18 months this technology will also be deployed across the entire RFS Fleet.
