A heartwarming gesture of community support has lifted the spirits of nurses at Wyalong and District Hospital, thanks to the dedication and generosity of local artist, Ollie MacFarlane, and his family. Ollie hosted a remarkable art exhibition in early December 2024, raising $900 for the hospital's nursing staff. His goal? To show appreciation for the exceptional care they gave to his family - specially his grandfather, Archie Boneham - during a life-saving emergency in 2023.

The exhibition was a vibrant showcase of Ollie’s talent, with his paintings capturing the beauty of local life, nature, and his unique perspective on the world. But beyond the brushstrokes and colours, it was the love and gratitude behind the exhibition that made it so special.

“This organisation was our first choice after the life-saving work done for my dad (Ollie’s grandfather) in 2023,” says Therese MacFarlane, Ollie’s mother.

"The nurses here have always been incredible, not only in the care they gave my father but also in how they supported Ollie and our family."

For Ollie, the exhibition was not just a way to share his art, but a heartfelt thanks to the people who made such a difference in his family’s lives. Having grown up in West Wyalong, Ollie is deeply connected to his community, and the opportunity to give back through his art was a source of great pride.

Ollie’s involvement at the hospital extends beyond the exhibition. He is a regular volunteer, assisting with laundry duties at the hospital - a humble yet vital role that gives him a sense of purpose and connection to the hardworking staff. His contribution may be small, but to the hospital’s staff, it’s a big part of the community spirit that they cherish.

“We really want the money to go to the nurses because they are amazing. Thank you,” Therese added, with a smile that reflected the family's deep appreciation.

Nurses at Wyalong and District Hospital were moved by the MacFarlanes' gesture. Louise McCabe, a senior nurse at the hospital, and President of the Wyalong Hospital Auxiliary, shared just how much it meant to the team.

"This is morale-boosting for us. The nurses and other staff including our radiographer, go above and beyond here, and when it’s acknowledged by the community, it means so much to us," she said, her voice filled with gratitude.

"It’s not every day you get such a public display of appreciation, and it really lifts our spirits. Thank you, Ollie and Therese, for thinking of us."

For the hospital administration, the donation is more than just a financial gift. It’s a testament to the remarkable bond between the community and its healthcare workers.

"Knowing what our staff do, recognition like this highlights the exceptional skill and standards we have here with our nurses. We are grateful and appreciative," said Louise.

Ollie’s art exhibition has not only raised funds but also brought the community closer together. His story - of resilience, gratitude, and giving back - reminds us all of the power of simple acts of kindness. And for the nurses who care for our loved ones in times of need, this recognition serves as a reminder that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.
