THE WEST WYALONG Redbacks Women’s 10’s Rugby Union side is off to the South West Cup First Grade grand final for 2025 after a strong win over arch-rivals Temora Tuskers last weekend.

Played at Cootamundra, the Redbacks were 31-22 winners in a tight affair but they were always the stronger of the two sides. They will now await the winner of Grenfell Pink Panthers and Temora at Harden this weekend before the decider on Saturday August 23.

The five tries to four victory means West Wyalong have beaten Temora twice this season as well as sharing a draw while they have also had the wood over Grenfell too and will be quietly confident regardless of who they line up against in the big dance.

Grenfell scraped home 26-19 against a brave Young side also played at Coota on the weekend.

Laura Harland, Ava Lemon and captain, Bec Ball were the try scorers for the Redbacks while Pursehouse bagged two conversions and Louise McCabe one.

Lemon had another day out, snaffling a hat-trick for West Wyalong in a dominant display. She was well supported by the rest of the side who are playing some outstanding footy at the business end of the season. It is hard to fathom that only a year ago, the same side was rooted to the bottom of the ladder with no cohesion or way forward. How things have changed!

But this 2025 side is made of different stuff and better for the experience. That experience will be vital if the Redbacks are to break an eight year title drought in just over a week.

Regardless of the grand final result, the Redbacks can be extremely proud of their efforts and have had a successful season nonetheless.

The emergence of new talent and the development of seasoned players has seen a great blend of youth and experience throughout the ranks this campaign and all these ingredients will be necessary if they are to lift the trophy.

Club President and player, Louise McCabe was elated with the win sharing a post on the official Redbacks Facebook page last weekend -

“What an incredible season it has been for our mighty Redbacks! The hard work, dedication, and passion from every player, coach, and supporter has been nothing short of inspiring, and it has been an absolute privilege to be part of this journey.”

After the season the side has had, it would be a brave man (or woman) to bet against them. Let’s bring it home Redbacks!
