THE Murrumbidgee Mavericks have kicked off their 2025 Waratah Women’s State League campaign in style, grinding out a thrilling 64-58 win over the Newcastle Falcons in front of a fired-up home crowd at Leeton Indoor Stadium on Saturday night.

In a contest that had it all — pace, physicality, and plenty of big-time plays — it was the hometown heroes who stood tall when it mattered most. Local sensation Georgia McCormack lit up the scoreboard with a blistering 27-point performance, leading the way in a tight battle that went down to the wire.

Fellow Mavs Maddy Routley (18 points) and Emmerson Waide (11 points) brought plenty of punch at both ends of the floor, while Jess Johnston and Lesa Matthews added strength, hustle, and key defensive stops in crunch time. Inaugural Mavs Assistant Coach Lesa Matthews having committed to another Waratah Womens State League Season on the hardwood, brings a hard-nosed on court presence in the paint whilst providing the essential experience needed to make the youthful Mavericks walk taller as the new season unfolds.

A proud West Wyalong Basketball Association product who has led her beloved Wildcats to 3 recent MIA League deciders, Lesa will call on all her representative playing and coaching experience with NSW Country to help the squad this year.

The Falcons refused to go quietly, mounting several second-half rallies and pushing the Mavericks to dig deep defensively. But each time Newcastle closed the gap, the Mavs answered back — whether it was Routley crashing the boards or Waide hitting clutch shots from the perimeter.

With the win, the Mavericks begin their season 1-0 and build momentum ahead of a tough road clash against the Springwood Scorchers.
