Maggies fall short in Tiger town as Tulli smack Dogs
Eliminator this weekend between Magpies and Bulldogs for finals
HUGE efforts from Harry Roscarel and Tyler Crofts with three goals each wasn’t enough to stop another Lachlan Robertson clinic as the Lake Cargelligo Tigers asserted themselves as title favourites with a resounding 19.14.128 to Ungarie 11.13.79 at the Lake Cargelligo Recreation Ground last weekend.
Reuben West, Noah Bryant and Josh Roscarel got one each but strong attacking performance was let down by a poor defensive showing - admittedly, against a well-drilled side that is humming like a new car.
Robertson, off the back of a bag of goals last week against the Bulldogs, claimed another seven in a great back up display for Lake. The Magpies defence had their work cut out against the dynamic forward and despite using a raft of measures, he still couldn’t be contained.
He was quick out of the gates too as Lake jumped to a six goal lead by quarter time - 8.3.51 to 2.2.14.
Over the next two quarters, both teams went goal for goal and behind for behind 6.7, as Ungarie began to find some rhythm. Despite the improved showing in defence, the Magpies couldn’t reduce the 37 point margin and were still trailing by as much entering the final stanza - 14.10.94 to 8.9.57.
A five goals to three last term, saw the Tigers increase their lead as they ran out 49 point victors infront of a parochial home crowd while the Ungarie side are now locked in a battle for the fourth and final semi spot with arch rivals West Wyalong-Girral, who were beaten by fellow finals aspirants Tulli Grasshoppers by 115 points - 24.17.161 to 7.4.46 at Tullibegeal Sports Ground. An inspired three goal effort from Simon Clarke wasn’t enough as a 2 point third quarter basically put pay to any hope the Dogs had of getting back into the contest against the Grasshoppers. Congrats to Ryan ‘Roo’ Argus for picking up the Ned Whiley Memorial Award for a great showing.
With both Ungarie and West Wyalong-Girral both coming off losses and sitting on 8 points on the ladder in equal fourth, tomorrow’s match at McAlister holds even more intrigue and importance with the finals looming. The Magpies and Bulldogs have locked horns twice this season already with one win a piece. The first was a tight one goal win to the Bulldogs in April followed by a 21 point lesson from the Magpies in the return home bout in May. This one is a winner takes all affair with the victor almost assured the fourth and final semi spot.
