BSC approves race strip

THE Saloon Car Drag Strip project in West Wyalong began in 2016, started by the Western Wheels Car Club, a group of local automobile enthusiasts focused on supporting car culture and motorsport.

Observing the economic impact that other towns experienced from hosting major automotive events, the club considered steps to generate similar economic benefits for our community. The group advanced the drag strip concept with a comprehensive Motorsport Park and Management Plan. Early community consultation indicated substantial support for the introduction of drag racing events in West Wyalong, with many residents expressing interest in participating.

Further analysis confirmed that successful drag racing events can boost tourism and hospitality by attracting thousands of spectators and participants. Furthermore, the drag strip could engage youth in motorsports, offering skill-building opportunities and by providing a safe, regulated environment. Much of this analysis was based on the successful economic stimulus outcomes of drag racing facilities in Tamworth and Whyalla . A properly developed drag strip in West Wyalong will promote our town as a destination and an opportunity for community pride.

Funding was secured for Stage 1 of the project from the State Government's Stronger Country Communities program. This involved creating a temporary track using the existing airport runway, but completion of water connections and grandstand seating by the Bland Shire Council (BSC) remained outstanding. Stage 2, the Saloon Car Drag Strip project, was approved under the Federal Government's Local Roads & Community Infrastructure program, allowing for upgrades to fixed designs. A Licence Agreement is in place to occupy the drag strip site.

The saloon drag strip project is managed entirely by Bland Shire Council and Western Wheels has been kept at arm's length. Unfortunately, since 2022 the project has stalled, much to the chagrin of punters and members' frustration.

In early 2023 the club were given assurances that the secured grant extension and additional funds would see it completed in December 2024. Since the assurance two years ago, little, if any, real progress has been made. Now there is a significant risk of the project not proceeding and grant funds lost.

Initially, the project received full funding from a NSW Government grant, along with supplementary support from the Council. However, unforeseen delays and planning considerations have considerably heightened costs. These issues, beyond the control of the project proponents, have hindered progress and now pose a threat to the viability of the project. To restart and complete the Saloon Car Drag Strip $1.5 million of Council funds will be needed to co-fund the project

At the recent Council meeting, Councillor McGlynn emphasised the importance of revisiting prior commitments to provide funding and support for the development of a Motorsports Park and saloon drag strip at the Aerodrome. To help bring this project back on track, the Council has recommended allocating $1.5 million from unrestricted cash-invested funds for the construction of the saloon car drag strip in West Wyalong. This recommendation was carried unanimously by Councillors in one of the most important sports tourism decisions BSC has made - well done!
