Another one bites the crust but memories to Last a lifetime!
Popular cafe closes doors

WEST Wyalong has lost one of its beloved cafes and community hubs, as Barb Last has officially closed the doors to her much-loved eatery, What’s Cookin’.
After 7.5 years of serving food and fostering friendships, Barb made the difficult decision to close up shop, leaving behind a legacy of top hospitality and everlasting memories.
“I’m very emotional,” Barb admitted.
“It’s been such a rewarding experience, and I’ve loved serving food to this wonderful community.” A Sydney native who first came to West Wyalong via Orange, Barb quickly found a home in the small New South Wales town and was embraced by the locals.
“It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with West Wyalong,” she said.
“Even though I’ve only been here nine years, it truly feels like home. The people here are amazing. I’ve made friends who feel more like family.”
For Barb, What’s Cookin’ was more than just a café. It was a place to connect with the locals and serve up comforting meals, beverages, and smiles. Her flummeries especially were a hit especially in our office here at the West Wyalong Advocate! But after a significant chapter, Barb knew it was time to step away.
In a heartfelt statement on the café’s Facebook page, Barb expressed her gratitude to her loyal customers.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of What’s Cookin’,” she wrote.
“While I am still waiting to receive confirmation of the sale of my building, I’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors. I want to express my deepest gratitude for your incredible support over the years. It has been an absolute pleasure serving you, building friendships, and being part of this wonderful community. I’m truly grateful for the loyalty and warmth you’ve shown me and the What’s Cookin’ team.”
Barb’s emotional farewell wasn’t only reserved for her customers. She noted the outpouring of support from regulars and newcomers alike, many of whom shared their fond memories of the café’s welcoming atmosphere and delicious menu.
“I truly appreciate all of you,” Barb said.
“Thank you again for everything. It’s been a joy to be a part of your lives, and I wish you nothing but the best in the future.”
Though What’s Cookin’ is no longer open for business, Barb’s journey in West Wyalong is far from over. She plans to take some time to rest before finding her next adventure.
“I’ll be taking a bit of time off to recharge,” Barb explained.
“Then, I’ll look for a new job, but West Wyalong will always be my home. It’s the best community I’ve ever lived in.”
Barb and the What’s Cookin’ team had their final day of service on Saturday, February 15th, and this week has been spent cleaning up the café and saying their goodbyes. While it’s the end of an era for the café, the friendships Barb has built will continue to thrive in the heart of the West Wyalong community.
As she turns this page and onto another, Barb leaves behind a legacy of delicious food, warm smiles, and a café that was more than just a place to eat - it was a place where everyone felt welcome.
Thank you, Barb, for everything you’ve given to West Wyalong. You’ll always be a part of this town’s heart. Your warmth and tremendous hospitality was the icing on the cake!
