THE WEST Wyalong-Girral Bulldogs had a day they would rather forget last start against title fancies Lake Cargelligo 27.19.181 to 9.5.59 in a game that has left the side on the bottom of the ladder yet ironically in a dog fight for a minor semi-final spot.
The match couldn’t have started any worse for the Bulldogs, who were 45 points behind after the first quarter with a lone goal and two behinds to their name after the Tigers turned it on with eight goals and five behinds of their own.
Sadly, things didn’t get much better despite matching it with Lake with four goals a piece in the second term - the lead had ballooned even further to 51 points by the main break.
Lachlan Robertson had a day out for the Tigers with 18 goals with the next closest teammate to him Greg McFayden grabbing only two majors.
Robertson was unstoppable and the Bulldogs had no answer in defence for the burly forward who scored from everywhere at will.
By three-quarter time the lead was stretched to 84 points and while the Dogs never threw in the towel, the Tigers were ruthless and were in no mood for compassion.
Another eight goal final term saw the scoreboard reach 181 - a score normally reserved for cricket season at the Lake Cargelligo Recreation Ground.
He was supported admirably by Jed Litchfield and Nathan Job while Latrell Dutton was also strong for the Tigers in a comprehensive display that must surely have the other teams quaking in their boots.
For the Bulldogs, Simon Clarke played a lone hand in front of goal with four goals while Will McMartin, Brent Heydon, Cameron Stokes, Woody Ambrose and Caleb Downey each nabbed one a piece.
While the Dogs will be licking their wounds, they are still a shot at semi-final football believe it or not as they remain in a battle with Tulli and Ungarie for third and fourth.
Tomorrow they face their first do-or-die test as they come up against the Tullibigeal Grasshoppers in Tulli before another vital clash with the Ungarie Magpies at home, a bye then games against Hillston and Lake again to round out the season.
In Women’s A Grade, the girls played out a 38-38 draw with Lana Maitland a tour de force on the field for the Doggies while Chloe Clarke also had some solid moments.
In B Grade, Kristie Freeman starred as WW-G ran out 23 point winners in tight affair. Laylah Davies picked up the Coaches Award for another strong showing while in C Grade, it was another win for the Bulldogs by 35 points with Player’s Player going to Steph Heydon. The 16s and 13s also won as did the Boys 14s, while the 17s and 11s went down respectively.
